The Natural Dentist FAQ

  • Q:

Are your products gluten free? Dairy free? Corn free? What about MSG?

A: Our products are free of any MSG, dairy, wheat or gluten based ingredients. However, several of the ingredients in our toothpastes and rinses are sourced through the hydrogenation or fermentation of corn and corn oil. If you have a sensitivity to corn, we suggest that you ask your doctor before using The Natural Dentist products.

  • Q:

    Are your products nut-free?

A: Our rinses and toothpastes are free of peanuts and tree nuts. Additionally, our factory has protocols in place to prevent cross contamination from any other products they make. There are no peanut or tree nut ingredients used in any of the products made at the site.

  • Q:

    Are your products vegan?

A: The Natural Dentist products do not use any animal-derived ingredients nor are they ingredients tested on animals.

  • Q:

Do your products contain sesame ingredients?

A: The Natural Dentist products do not use sesame-derived ingredients. There are no known sesame ingredients used in the products made at the factory.

  • Q:

    Are your products Kosher?

A: The Natural Dentist products are not Kosher certified.

  • Q:

    What is vegetable glycerin?

A: Vegetable glycerin is a protectant that helps to soothe sore gums and mouth irritations. It also helps to balance and maintain moisture levels and is safely used in a wide variety of personal care products and foods. Our vegetable glycerin is derived from a mixture of vegetable sources including soy, palm, palm kernel, coconut and canola (or rapeseed) oil.

  • Q:

I am having trouble printing the coupons. Can you help?

A: If you are getting an “Oops!” message, you probably have your cookies blocked. You will need to allow cookies in order to see the coupons. If you see the coupons, but are having trouble printing, please check that you’ve installed the Coupon Printer and that your printer is turned on and has paper loaded before selecting “Print Coupons.” If you have a smartphone or other mobile device, you may find it easier to download the Hopster app and print (to your Wi-Fi-enabled printer) that way. • Q:

I already brush and floss—why should I rinse?

A: Brushing and flossing are the foundation of good oral health but rinsing offers many benefits that aren’t covered by brushing and flossing. The American Dental Association (ADA) now recommends a three-step oral care routine – brush, floss and rinse. Rinse allows you to get to hard-to-reach places and offers a more extensive period of contact than brushing and flossing alone. Bacteria cause gingivitis and more serious forms of gum disease. Dentists recommend The Natural Dentist rinse as an extra measure of protection for the soft tissue in your mouth and the health of your gums.

  • Q:

Why choose a natural toothpaste and mouth rinse?

A: Many products contain artificial and harsh ingredients, dyes, preservatives and alcohol, which can be absorbed through the soft tissue in your mouth. The Natural Dentist has equal or better results using natural ingredients and will contribute to the overall health of your body.

  • Q:

    Where are your products manufactured?

A: Our mouthwashes are manufactured in the United States. Our toothpastes are made in India.

  • Q:

Are any of your ingredients genetically modified?

A: It is not our intent or our policy to source any plants altered by genetically modified organisms (GMOs). However, agricultural experts believe that many American crops have been unintentionally affected because there are ultimately no barriers to cross-pollination. Therefore, we cannot certify that our US-cultivated plant ingredients have not been affected.

  • Q:

How do you source your natural ingredients?

A: All of our botanicals are specially cultivated in North America, not wild-crafted. This helps to make our products safe and consistent. Our practices of cultivation and sourcing are environmentally sustainable.

  • Q:

    Are your products hypoallergenic?

A: Due to the wide range of sensitivities to plants and natural ingredients, we can’t guarantee that our products are hypoallergenic (not allergy-causing) for every individual. Check our list of ingredients and contact your doctor or allergist if you have questions.

  • Q:

Do your products contain artificial colorants?

A: Our products do not contain any artificial coloring. Our rinses and toothpastes obtain their color from plant-based components and/or minerals.

  • Q:

Is your vegetable glycerin sourced in China?

A: Our vegetable glycerin is not sourced in China.

  • Q:

Should I rinse my mouth out with water after using your mouth rinse?

A: We do not recommend rinsing with water after using our mouth rinses because that will limit their effectiveness. For best results, don’t eat or drink anything for one half hour after you rinse. The longer the rinse can be in contact with the surfaces in the mouth, the longer it will help to soothe and cleanse your mouth.

  • Q:

Should I rinse before or after I brush?

A: For best and long-lasting results, we recommend using our rinse at the end of your oral care routine with the exception of our Healthy White Pre-Brush Rinse, which, as its name implies, should be used prior to brushing. You can use any of our other rinses after brushing in combination with Healthy White.

  • Q:

I am pregnant; can I still use your products?

A: While The Natural Dentist products are formulated to be gentle and safe, some of the botanicals used in the formula are contra-indicated during pregnancy. Therefore, we recommend that you check with your doctor before use if you are pregnant.

  • Q:

    How are your products tested?

A: The Natural Dentist products are tested in professional labs, dental schools and in studies conducted by universities. Products have been clinically proven effective in laboratory tests (in vitro) and with adult volunteers (in vivo). Our products are not tested on animals.

  • Q:

Is it safe to swallow your rinse?

A: We do not recommend drinking the rinse, but small amounts are swallowed whenever you rinse or gargle. This is perfectly safe. If more fluoride rinse than used when rinsing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center.

  • Q:

Is it safe to swallow the toothpaste?

A: Toothpaste with fluoride always includes directions to spit, not swallow after brushing. The very small amounts that you might swallow as a result of brushing are perfectly safe.

  • Q:

What is SLS? Why do you highlight the fact that your toothpaste is SLS-Free?

A: SLS stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. It is a detergent used in most toothpastes that creates foam when you brush. Just as soap can be irritating to your skin because it removes natural oils, SLS can irritate the gums when used on a daily basis. It can cause sloughing of gum tissue and is also known to cause canker sores in the mouth. We offer a gentle, low-foaming alternative that is safe for everyone, including those with sensitive mouths.

  • Q:

Why does Healthy Gums Peppermint Twist rinse sometimes leave green clumps when I spit it out?

A: Healthy Gums Peppermint Twist contains an ingredient called Copper Chlorophyllin, which is used for color. It is perfectly safe and natural. However, it can cause the rinse to appear ‘clumpy’ in the sink after you spit it out because it binds to proteins in your saliva.

  • Q:

Will The Natural Dentist Mouth Rinse stain my teeth?

A: The Natural Dentist Mouth Rinses contain ingredients that are water soluble and do not cause staining.

  • Q:

My rinse seems to be a different color than the last bottle. Why is that?

A: Unlike chemically-produced artificial colors, the botanical ingredients that we use to color our products sometimes differ from batch to batch due to natural variances caused by environmental factors. This will occasionally cause some differences in the color of our product from one bottle to the next. We strive to make our products as consistent as possible.

  • Q:

Are there drug interactions with ingredients in your products?

A: None have been reported, so we are not aware of any interactions. Your physician or pharmacist can help you answer any questions you may have about specific drug interactions.

  • Q:

Does grapefruit seed extract interact with medicines that I take?

A: Certain medications interact negatively when taken with grapefruit juice. There is no grapefruit juice in our grapefruit seed extract and we have no indication that the grapefruit seed extract in our Healthy Gums Mouth Rinse has any interaction problems. Please check with your doctor/pharmacist if you have questions.

  • Q:

How does your toothpaste whiten my teeth?

A: The silica in our Whitening Toothpaste has been specially designed to gently polish the enamel and remove stains without causing damage to the teeth. RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity) testing has shown that our toothpaste is gentle on tooth enamel. In addition, PCR (Pellicle Cleaning Ratio) testing shows that The Natural Dentist Whitening Toothpaste has effective cleaning and stain removal abilities. It’s this combination of gentle cleaning with stain removal that makes our Whitening toothpaste stand out.

  • Q:

Is it okay for my child to use a fluoridated toothpaste or rinse?

A: Please consult with your dentist or pediatrician as they will be able to take into consideration your child’s particular needs. If they do want you to use fluoride, be sure to supervise children when they brush or rinse in order to teach the child to spit, not swallow, the excess.

  • Q:

Do you use a synthetic fluoride?

A: Fluoride is a processed material, but because dentists recommend it for cavity prevention, we include it in some of our products. See: Why do you use fluoride in your products? (below).

  • Q:

Why do you use fluoride in your products?

A: Fluoride is the only cavity-prevention ingredient recognized by both the American Dental Association and the FDA. Fluoride’s cavity-fighting properties make it the most common ingredient that dentists recommend when selecting toothpaste. The amount and type of fluoride used by The Natural Dentist is regulated by the FDA and, when used as directed, will help protect teeth against cavities. The fluoride we use meets all FDA standards for both safety and effectiveness. For customers who prefer products without fluoride, we offer the option of toothpaste and rinse formulations that are completely fluoride-free.

  • Q:

Are any of your products mint and menthol free?

A: For those who want to avoid mint, we do offer some mint-free alternatives. Our Healthy Gums Orange Zest Mouth Rinse and Cavity Zapper Not Yucky Grape Toothpaste do not contain any mint or menthol.

  • Q:

    What is titanium dioxide?

A: Titanium dioxide is a naturally-occurring mineral that is used to impart opacity to our toothpaste, making it white in color. There are also small amounts mixed in with the mica in the Cavity Zapper Toothpastes.

  • Q:

How much Xylitol is used in The Natural Dentist products?

A: Cavity Zapper fluoride rinse contains 3.5% xylitol. Most of the others contain 0.8% - this includes Healthy Teeth, Healthy Balance, Healthy Breath and Healthy White. The Natural Dentist Healthy Gums Mouth Rinses contain no xylitol.

  • Q:

Why do your products contain citric acid?

A: Our products contain a low level of citric acid, which in combination with the natural herbal blend, helps to naturally preserve our products. The acidity of our mouth rinses is buffered by saliva which brings your mouth pH back to neutral within one minute of spitting the rinse out.

  • Q:

Which of your toothpastes or rinses would be best for preventing cavities?

A: For targeting cavities specifically, we recommend using one of our fluoride rinses and toothpastes because fluoride is a cavity preventing ingredient. All of our toothpastes and a number of our mouth rinses also contain Xylitol, a natural sweetener and cavity preventing aid.
